Review board: No violations in police chief’s speech at DNC
PITTSBURGH – One of two review boards has cleared Pittsburgh’s police chief of violating city laws when he appeared at the Democratic National Convention.
The Office of Municipal Investigation’s findings released on Friday say complaints against Chief Cameron McLay are unfounded.
McLay spoke at the DNC in uniform. He has defended his remarks as nonpartisan, though the Fraternal Order of Police has said the appearance violates a conduct policy that says police cannot engage in political activities while in uniform.
McLay requested the independent investigations last month. Investigators say he was adamant he would speak only about community-police relations and refused to mention any candidate’s name.
The Citizens Police Review Board is also looking into the complaints. Officials there say their review is done and will be released later this month.
