Snowfall warnings issued for southern Interior mountain passes

PENTICTON – Travel will be a challenge on several mountain passes in the southern Interior today thanks to a snow-laden weather system moving across the region.

Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings today, Dec. 11, for the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Hope, the Trans-Canada Highway from Eagle Pass to Rogers pass, and Highway 3 between the Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass.

An intense Pacific frontal system is tracking across the region, Environment Canada says. Motorists are advised to be prepared for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

About 20 to 25 centimetres of snow expected today on the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Hope, and Highway 3 between the Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass, while 15 to 20 cm is expected on the Trans-Canada Highway from Eagle Pass to Rogers pass.

The heavy snowfall is expected to taper off tonight.
