Commons Speaker says NDP broke the rules in mass mail-out
OTTAWA – The Speaker of the House of Commons is confirming that the NDP broke the rules on using parliamentary resources with a series of mailings.
Andrew Scheer says the Board of Internal Economy, the closed-door committee of MPs that oversees Commons spending, found the mailings were political.
Scheer is chairman of the committee and he says officials have been asked to suggest appropriate remedies for the infraction.
He also says the NDP has been asked to provide all proofs of the mailings by the end of next week.
The board has been looking at up to 1.8 million pieces of mail sent into dozens of ridings using Commons envelopes and the free postage services available to MPs.
The NDP has accused the board of acting as a kangaroo court and says its mailings were cleared by Scheer and the House of Commons administration.
