Vernon residents wake up to blanket of snow

VERNON – North Okanagan residents woke up to a thick blanket of snow Wednesday morning.

Environment Canada is calling for 2-4 cm of snow today, though the white stuff is expected to change to rain sometime this morning.

The dump of snow means buses in the Vernon school district will be running behind schedule, and only on passable roads. The district tweeted that many side roads will not be accessible this morning.

In the North Okanagan-Shuswap school district, one school is closed for the day. Silver Creek Elementary students are being sent home by bus and parents are being notified by the school district. The school currently has no power and B.C. Hydro is on scene working to restore it. 

Thousands of Okanagan residents are without power this morning and the weather system has also brought heavy snow to mountain passes throughout the Southern Interior.

Meanwhile, the dump of snow is surely welcome news for Silver Star Mountain Resort, which opens some of its alpine runs Thursday.
