Libyan officials: Suicide bomber targets residence of rogue general; 3 killed

TRIPOLI, Libya – Libyan military officials say a suicide bomber has targeted the residence of a rogue general who has been leading an offensive against Islamists dominating the country’s political scene in the eastern city of Benghazi, killing three people.

The officials say four people were also wounded in Wednesday’s attack but there were conflicting reports on whether Gen. Khalifa Hifter was among those hurt.

Hifter’s spokesman, Col. Mohamed Higazy, said the general was unhurt but the military officials say he was injured and taken to a Benghazi hospital.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack, which bore the hallmarks of Islamic militants, whom Hifter has vowed to crush since launching his offensive last month.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
