US Embassy says American businessman Zack Shahin released on bail pending trial in Dubai
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A U.S. Embassy official in the United Arab Emirates says American businessman Zack Shahin is out on bail pending trial after more than four years in a Dubai jail.
Embassy spokesman Jeffrey Ladenson says Shahin was met by an American consular officer upon his release late Thursday. He welcomed the move and urged Dubai prosecutors to hear Shahin’s case “in a timely and transparent fashion.”
Shahin is the former CEO of Dubai-based property developer Deyaar. He was arrested in 2008 during an investigation into alleged embezzlement, and was later targeted in other probes involving alleged financial impropriety. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Shahin began a hunger strike in May to press authorities to hear his case. He began eating last week once terms for his bail were set.
