Alberta continues to sell caribou habitat despite federal recovery plan

EDMONTON – Alberta continues to sell off undisturbed remnants of habitat for endangered mountain caribou herds even though Ottawa has released a plan that land be restored, not further disturbed.

Another 500 hectares is to go on the block next Wednesday on the range of a herd federal scientists consider in imminent danger of disappearing.

Environment Canada issued a recovery plan Monday that says at least two-thirds of the herd’s range should remain undisturbed or be restored.

About half the herd’s range is now undisturbed.

Alberta’s previous selloffs of energy leases on mountain caribou range was widely condemned by opposition politicians and groups such as the Alberta Fish and Game Association.

The herds have lost 60 per cent of their numbers over the last decade, largely due to industrial activity.
