Crown urges up to two years jail for violent G20 Black Bloc vandal

TORONTO – The Crown is urging a judge to jail a Black Bloc vandal who was part of the G20 rampage in Toronto for up to two years.

Saying Kelly Pflug-Back played a leadership role in the June 2010 violence, the prosecution argued she did not deserve a conditional sentence.

Pflug-Back, of Guelph, Ont., pleaded guilty in February to charges of wearing a disguise and seven counts of mischief over $5,000.

In her submissions, the prosecutor read victim-impact statements from people terrified as the vandals smashed store windows and attacked police cruisers.

The Crown urged the judge to send a strong message that violent protest damages legitimate dissent and is affront to individual rights.

Court also heard Pflug-Back had pleaded guilty just months prior to another mischief charge involving an Olympic torch protest.
