The Latest: Bond set for man charged in ex-wife’s death

PHOENIX – The Latest on the fatal shooting of a woman in the parking lot of a Phoenix apartment complex (all times local):

4:00 p.m.

A $1 million bond has been set for a man suspect of killing his ex-wife in a Phoenix parking lot while their two young children were present.

Authorities say Josiah English III shot Blanca Gutierrez-Calzoncit (cal-zohn-CEET’) early Tuesday as she was putting the children in her car.

The children were unharmed but a bullet struck the car’s door close to where the youngest child was buckled in.

English was embroiled in a custody dispute with his ex-wife.

Prosecutor Robert Beardsley says English appeared angry at a court hearing Monday during which a judge was asked whether Gutierrez-Calzoncit could travel to Mexico.

Lindsay Abramson, an attorney representing English, said she wasn’t going to respond to the allegations against English.

A man suspected of killing his ex-wife in Phoenix on Tuesday while their two young children were present was embroiled in an acrimonious divorce.

Josiah English III was accused during the divorce of domestic violence and had voiced concerns that Blanca Gutierrez-Calzoncit (cal-zohn-CEET’) would flee to Mexico with their children.

English was arrested on suspicion of murder in Gutierrez-Calzoncit’s death.

Police say the two children were present but unharmed during the attack.

It’s not known whether English has yet been assigned an attorney.

The shooting occurred on the same day that the Arizona Court of Appeals ruled against English in his appeal of the divorce case.

The court sent an email to English informing him of the decision more than three hours after the shooting.

Phoenix police say a man has been arrested in the parking lot shooting death of his ex-wife while their two small children were present.

Police say there were continuing legal battles between the parents.

Josiah English III, 40, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and aggravated assault in the killing Tuesday morning of 35-year-old Blanca Gutierrez-Calzoncit (cal-zohn-CEET’).

Gutierrez-Calzoncit was shot multiple times in the parking lot of the apartment complex where she lived. Police have said the children were present but not whether they saw their mother being killed.

Court records indicate English and Gutierrez-Calconcit were battling over her intent to relocate the children to Mexico.

English represented himself in the pending family-law case. Court records don’t list an attorney for English who could comment on the criminal allegations.
