Cuomo says rise in NYC subway sex crimes is ‘unacceptable’
NEW YORK – Gov. Andrew Cuomo says more needs to be done to curb a rise in sex offences in the New York City subway system.
The Democrat said Tuesday that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority needs to take more steps to strengthen patrols in the subway system. He says more plainclothes officers are also needed to crack down on lewd behaviour.
Police said Monday there had been 431 sex crimes in the subway this year. That’s 156 more than the year before.
Cuomo calls the increase “completely unacceptable.”
Police say despite the rise, there’s no indication of more sex crimes in the subway system. They say more people are reporting the offences.
An MTA spokesman says the agency takes the issue seriously and is committed to deploying all assets to end sex offences against riders.
