Construction phase completed on Penticton hospital tower

PENTICTON – A major milestone in the Penticton Regional Hospital expansion took place earlier this week as the project’s contractors marked substantial completion of the building.

A symbolic presentation of keys took place on Dec. 15 signifying the three-year, $312 million project’s completion of the construction phase, according to an Interior Health media release.

Interior Health employees, physicians and volunteers will start building orientation and training as new equipment, computers, and furniture is installed in the coming months in preparation for the six storey tower’s opening to patients in late April, 2019, the release states.

“We’re thrilled that the David E. Kampe Tower has met this significant milestone,” Okanagan-Similkameen Regional Hospital District chair Petra Veintimilla said in the release. “This hospital will enhance the care patients are receiving in Penticton and across the South Okanagan-Similkameen region.”

ElllisDon Infrastructure was selected by Interior Health in 2016 to design, build, partially finance and maintain the David E. Kampe Tower. The contractor will provide maintenance services at the hospital for a 30-year period.

Interior Health says a second phase of renovations will begin following the opening to the tower to expand the existing hospital’s emergency department and renovate the hospital pharmacy and material stores.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
