3 Benelux PMs in Tunisia to talk terrorism, immigration

TUNIS, Tunisia – The prime ministers of Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Tunisia have agreed to co-operate more closely to counter terrorism, violent extremism and organized crime.

Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte told reporters that the fight against terrorism topped the agenda of closed-door talks the European leaders had with their Tunisian counterpart, Prime Minister Yousseh Chahed, on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the official TAP news agency, citing Chahed, said Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel also wants to work with the North African nation to better secure its borders with Libya, where the Islamic State group and other extremists have taken refuge.

Tunisia has dealt with two major terror attacks while cultivating its budding democracy.

In a joint statement, the prime ministers also cited illegal immigration as a major common challenge for their countries.
