Officials: 9 high school rowers saved after vessel overturns

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. – Officials say nine members of a high school rowing team had to be rescued off the coast of Long Island after a powerboat with no lights passed them at a high rate of speed, causing their vessel to overturn.

Newsday reports (http://nwsdy.li/2emd2Zw ) officials say Glen Cove Harbor Patrol officers pulled the members of the Manhasset (man-HA’-set) High School girls’ rowing team out of Hempstead Harbor on Wednesday evening. They were about 200 yards from shore.

Port Washington fire officials say the girls swam about 150 yards before being picked up by rescuers.

Fire officials say it was dark at the time.

No members of the team were hurt and all declined medical attention.
