NEW YORK, N.Y. – The NHL’s competition committee says expanded video review is unlikely to solve problems with goaltender interference.
The committee met Monday and discussed expanded video review and coach’s challenges among other topics, but the NHL’s Colin Campbell and NHLPA’s Mathieu Schneider implied that it’s unlikely to include goalie interference calls.
Goaltender interference is a hot topic in the league after the New York Rangers felt officials a missed call that led to a Los Angeles goal in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final.
The Kings went on to win 5-4 in double overtime and take a 2-0 series lead.
Campbell, the league’s executive vice president and director of hockey operations, said more education will be provided to players and officials about goalie interference if it’s not subject to video review.
The competition committee recommended a handful of changes designed to increase offence, including a more lenient interpretation of kicked goals and changing ends and doing a dry scrape of the ice before overtime in the regular season.
