Saskatchewan comedy-horror movie scores in limited release at box office
REGINA – The producers of the made-in-Saskatchewan comedy-horror movie “WolfCop” are howling with joy.
CineCoup CEO J. Joly says the movie — about a werewolf police officer with a nasty temper —opened on the weekend in theatres in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.
The film brought in an average of $5,000 per screening.
Joly says that’s pretty good considering Hollywood movies usually make between $6,000 and $10,000 per screening.
“WolfCop” is scheduled to open in five more theatres this week and will debut in Toronto this Friday.
The creators of “WolfCop” won a competition at last year’s Banff World Media Festival and were chosen among five finalists to receive a $1 million investment from CineCoup.
“We’re really, really happy,” Joly said Monday. “We got a great screen average considering we did no traditional media in terms of putting big advertisements on TV and stuff like that.”
Writer-director Lowell Dean has described his main character as “`Dirty Harry,’ only hairier.”
The story is set in a fictional town called Woodhaven and follows alcoholic cop Lou Garou (a play on “loup garou,” which is french for werewolf) who is subject to blackouts.
When the full moon is out, he becomes a “rage-fuelled werewolf.”
A sequel is already in the works.
