BERLIN – German police say they temporarily detained a Moroccan man who is accused of threatening, insulting and spitting at two Jews in the northern city of Hamburg.
Police said in a statement Friday the 45-year-old was insulting the two Jewish men Thursday near city hall when they called a nearby police officer for help. When the officer confronted the Moroccan, he first tried to run away but then turned to the two men and spat at them.
Police said the man, who spoke Arabic and German, resisted and had to be handcuffed.
Local media identified the victims as a rabbi and a well-known Jewish community member who were leaving a meeting with city officials.
The suspect, whose name wasn’t given in line with privacy laws, was released while the investigation proceeds.
