Explosions, fire reported at fiberboard plant in Columbia Falls, Montana

KALISPELL, Mont. – Authorities say explosions and a fire have been reported at a fiberboard plant in Columbia Falls, Montana.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry tells the Flathead Beacon that preliminary reports have few details about the incident at the Plum Creek Timber Co. plant.

The Daily Inter Lake reports fire departments were dispatched after 3 p.m. Tuesday. Flames and thick plumes of smoke are visible from the plant.

Neighbour Dorothy Downen says two or three loud explosions shook her house.

Plum Creek spokeswoman Kathy Budinick says company officials are unsure of the cause. She could not confirm whether any workers are hurt or missing.

Budinick says Plum Creek is working with public safety officials to contain the situation and make sure everyone is safe.
