Former Puerto Rico House speaker under investigation

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Puerto Rico’s Justice Department says it is investigating the former speaker of the island’s House of Representatives following corruption allegations.

Officials said Friday that the results of a three-month preliminary investigation against Jaime Perello will be turned over to another division, which will analyze the probe and decide whether to file charges in the case.

Perello stepped down as speaker in August because of complaints about his alleged connections to a former fundraiser convicted in a political federal corruption case.

Fundraiser Anaudi Hernandez has said at least three officials under Perello’s supervision were steering government contracts to vendors as political favours. Ten people were convicted in that fraud scheme generating some $2 million.

Perello lost his seat in the legislature’s lower house during last week’s general elections.
