1 CFL Roughrider to stand trial on assault charge in bar fight; 1 will not

REGINA – A football player with the CFL Saskatchewan Roughriders has been ordered to stand trial on a charge of aggravated assault.

Taj Smith, a wide receiver with the Riders, was charged after a man was beaten outside Regina’s Pure Ultra Lounge last August.

Dwight Anderson, a defensive back with the Roughriders, was also charged in the same case.

However, after a two-day preliminary hearing held in Regina, a judge ruled there was enough evidence to warrant a trial in Smith’s case, but not for Anderson.

No date has been set yet for Smith’s trial.
