Frank Coleman quits politics only weeks before swearing in as premier
ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Frank Coleman has decided not to become Newfoundland and Labrador’s 12th premier, saying he is leaving politics because of a family matter.
He did not elaborate on what that matter is, saying only that his family comes first.
The sudden, unexpected move leaves the province’s majority Progressive Conservative government rudderless at a time when it is struggling to rebuild its flagging fortunes after 10 years in power.
Coleman, a Corner Brook businessman and unknown political novice, was only weeks away from being confirmed as party leader and sworn in as premier.
He secured the party leadership when he emerged as the sole candidate for the job earlier this spring.
Since then, he has endured a trial by fire that even supporters say caught his team off guard.
Questions have been raised about his pro-life views, his involvement is a cancelled paving contract and his lack of political experience.
