B.C. waits for federal decision on Northern Gateway pipeline proposal

VANCOUVER – Friends and foes of the Northern Gateway pipeline project are awaiting a final decision today from the federal government.

The announcement is expected after markets close at 4 p.m. Eastern time.

A joint federal review panel recommended approval of the pipeline in December, with 209 conditions, and the Conservative government has made it clear that finding new markets for Canadian oil is an economic priority.

Many opponents anticipate cabinet will give Calgary-based Enbridge (TSX:ENB) the go-ahead for the project and a rally is planned in Vancouver tonight under the banner “The Answer is Still No.”

The project still faces legal challenges from several First Nations and environmental groups.

Kinder Morgan faces similar hostility toward a proposed expansion of its existing Trans Mountain line to the West Coast and the Keystone XL pipeline to the U.S. Gulf Coast has been stalled for several years with U.S. lawmakers.
