2,900 from around globe sign petition against Tory science cuts
EDMONTON – More than 2,900 people from around the world have signed an online petition aimed at saving a unique open-air freshwater laboratory from federal government budget cuts.
Those organizing the petition to save the Experimental Lakes Area in Ontario say about 1,000 of the names come from outside Canada.
The signatories include both scientists and those concerned about freshwater.
The area includes 58 remote Ontario lakes and has yielded crucial long-term data on everything from acid rain to climate change.
It is slated to close next March for an annual saving of $2 million.
