Wholesale sales up 1.2 per cent to $51,2 billion in April: StatsCan

OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says wholesale sales rose 1.2 per cent to $51.2 billion in April, following a decline in March.

The agency says higher sales were recorded in all subsectors except for food, beverage and tobacco.

The subsectors that rose in April account for 80 per cent of wholesale sales.

The largest gain in April was in the building material and supplies subsector, which rose 3.6 per cent to $7.4 billion in a fourth consecutive monthly increase.

Sales decreased 0.9 per cent to $10.1 billion in the food, beverage and tobacco subsector, as a result of lower sales in all of its industries.

Sales rose in six provinces, with Ontario and British Columbia accounting for much of the gain.
