Black ice collision in Vernon sends one to hospital

VERNON — A two-vehicle collision caused by icy road conditions sent one person to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries this morning.

Police say today, Jan. 11, just before 8 a.m. emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle collision on Commonage Road and Bailey Road in Vernon, according to an RCMP media release.

A single vehicle was travelling northbound on Commonage Road when it hit black ice causing the vehicle to go into the ditch, police say.

A good Samaritan stopped to help the driver who had gone off road but just minutes later another vehicle hit the same patch of black ice and sent that vehicle into the ditch where it struck the good Samaritan and the driver of the first vehicle.

“The second vehicle clipped the Samaritan, causing only minor injury, however they struck the driver of the first vehicle sending them to the hospital via air ambulance with serious but non-life threatening injuries,” Vernon RCMP spokesperson Kelly Brett says in the release.

Brett says investigators concluded that the incident was caused by road conditions and no charges are being considered at this time.

Road crews were sent to the area for sanding. Commonage Road was temporarily closed but has since reopened.
