B.C. coroner warns against co-sleeper cribs after 10-month-old baby dies in Surrey

VICTORIA – The B.C. Coroner’s Service is warning parents about the dangers of a crib that attaches to an adult bed after a baby died in Surrey last year after she became trapped between two beds.

The 10-month-old girl had been placed in a crib called a co-sleeper.

An investigation by the Coroner’s Service found the baby suffocated when she became stuck face down between crib mattress and the adult bed.

Last year, Health Canada recalled the most common type of co-sleeper, the Original and Universal Co-Sleeper, made by California-based Arm’s Reach Concepts.

However, the Coroner’s Service says the cribs can still be found at garage sales, through websites like Craigslist, and they can still be bought in the U.S.

The service says babies are safest when put down to sleep on their back, in a properly-designed crib with no quilts, pillows, stuffed toys or other soft material.
