TORONTO – Toronto FC has its newest designated player after picking up Frenchman Eric Hassli from the Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday.
In exchange for Hassli, the Whitecaps get a first-round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft and an international spot through the 2013 season.
Toronto coach Paul Mariner had warned he would be looking to acquire attacking players after striker Danny Koevermans sustained a season-ending knee injury last week.
Hassli, 31, joined Vancouver from Swiss side FC Zurich at the start of the 2011 season. Since then, he’s scored 12 goals and five assists in 44 league appearances, as well as three goals in eight Canadian championship matches.
In June 2011, Hassli earned international acclaim for a long-range volley goal he scored against the Seattle Sounders.
