MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s Roman Catholic Church is condemning the killing of a parish priest in the state of Mexico.
The Mexican Council of Bishops says it is praying for 73-year-old Rev. Luis Lopez Villa and for a halt to the country’s violence.
The Nezahualcoyotl Diocese declined to comment Thursday. Local press reports say Lopez’s body was found inside the San Isidro Labrador parish home in La Paz township east of Mexico City on Wednesday night.
The public safety office in La Paz says the incident remains under investigation.
Lopez is the third priest killed this year in Mexico. Two priests in Tijuana and Mexico City were also wounded in stabbings this year.
According to the church’s Catholic Multimedia Center, Lopez is the 18th priest killed in Mexico since the beginning of 2013.
