Politicians host meet and greet
PENTICTON – Penticton’s new mayor and council including local representatives from the provincial and federal governments made themselves available to the public at an informal gathering at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre on Saturday.
A moderate turnout of citizens braved icy winds and below normal temperatures from 10 a.m. until noon to meet their new officials. Also present was Okanagan – Coquilhalla MP Dan Albas and Penticton MLA Dan Ashton.
“People are generally expressing their congratulations, or presenting their ideas to us,” said Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit. “This meeting is just another way of engaging the public – we felt that going to the public would be less intimidating. The opportunity for people to chat with us and exchange ideas is the whole idea behind this.”
Jakubeit said it was the first time the city had tried to engage the public this way.
Penticton city council’s inauguration ceremony takes place Monday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. in Salon “C” of the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre.
