Education Department apologizes for Tweet depicting scene from “Bridesmaids” movie.

WASHINGTON – The Education Department is apologizing for a Tweet depicting a scene from the movie “Bridesmaids” with the words “Help me. I’m poor” on it as part of an effort to get students to apply for federal aid.

The Tweet reads that “If this is you, then you better fill out your FAFSA: fafsa.gov.”

The quote in the movie is said during a comedic scene on an airplane by actress Kristen Wiig.

Education spokeswoman Dorie Nolt said in statement that the department apologizes for what she described as an insensitive post that flies in the face of the department’s mission of opening doors of opportunity.

She says it was an ill-conceived attempt at reaching students and the department is reviewing its process for approving social media content.

The Tweet was removed.
