Ottawa OKs Arctic offshore seismic tests over local objections

Ottawa is giving the OK to energy exploration in Arctic waters over the objections of local people.

In a letter to an Inuit group, federal Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt says he sees no reason to deny proposed seismic tests off the coast of Baffin Island later this summer.

Valcourt says his department is studying how development should proceed across the entire region and that information gleaned from the tests will help that process.

The tests have been opposed by Inuit groups and communities along Baffin Island’s eastern coast over concerns the loud noises will disturb the sea life they depend on.

Communities have also said they haven’t been adequately informed and consulted about the plans.
