Snow possible tomorrow followed by mild week in Okanagan

OKANAGAN – A chance of snow earlier in the week will give way to a mix of sun and cloud and temperatures above seasonal norms in the Okanagan.

Environment Canada meteorologist Carmen Hartt says it's a case of what you see is what you get in terms of the forecast for the remainder of the month and into February with normal to mild temperatures and “fairly quiet” weather.

You can expect a mix of sun and cloud today, Jan. 21, in Kelowna and Vernon with a high of 1 Celsius. Periods of snow are forecast to begin after midnight with a low of -5 C. In Penticton, the forecast calls for a mainly sunny day today with a high of plus 4 and a low overnight of -4 C.

Windchill will be a factor overnight up and down the valley.

The periods of snow are forecast to end tomorrow morning in Kelowna and Vernon with up to two centimetres expected making way for a cloudy day with a high of 1 C.

In Penticton, it will be cloudy tomorrow with a 60 per cent chance of flurries early in the morning, the wind south at 30 km/h with a high of 2 C.

A stronger band of snow is expected overnight tomorrow in the Okangan with a low of -3 C. Hartt says valley bottoms could see two to four cm, with up to 10 cm on the Coquihalla Highway.

There is little precipitation forecast after mid-week, with skies alternating between clouds and sun, and milder conditions returning with the building of a high pressure ridge.

Skies will clear Wednesday in the Okanagan, with a high of around 1 C.

The temperature will dip slightly to a high of only -1 C on Thursday under sunny skies. Friday will also be sunny, with daytime highs rising to 5 C.

Saturday and Sunday are expected to be cloudy, with a high of 3 C and 4 C respectively.

Hartt says temperatures have been trending 3 to 5 degrees above normal lately.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
