HARRISON, N.J. – Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his MLS-leading 12th goal of the season off Tim Cahill’s header in the 93rd minute to give the New York Red Bulls a 2-2 tie with Toronto FC on Friday night.
Cahill, a substitute in the 78th minute, set up the dramatic finish by flicking a header from the top of the box to the edge of the 6-yard line and Wright-Phillips’ left-footed finish slipped past goalkeeper Joe Bendik.
New York (4-5-7) opened the scoring when Peguy Luyindula headed in a contested ball to the right corner in the 36th minute off Ambroise Oyongo Bitolo’s cross.
Toronto (6-4-2) tied it in the 55th minute on Jermain Defoe’s clever finish at the edge the 6-yard box. It was Defoe’s fifth goal in his last five games.
Toronto took a 2-1 lead when Gilberto rocketed in a free kick in the 72nd minute, after coming in as a sub in the 65th.
