Last of 111 cats now stands alone at South Okanagan Similkameen SPCA

PENTICTON – Not long ago, Chatters had 110 friends at the Penticton SPCA. Today, he has none and that's the good news.

Three-year-old “Chatters” is all that's left of 111 cats left behind by one owner after evictions at the Delta Mobile Home park in Penticton last October — all over a two-day period.

Now he’s all by himself at the Dartmouth Avenue shelter today, Jan 23, waiting for adoption.

Branch manager Carolyn Hawkins says he’s still learning to trust people and is shy, and might need to be with at least one other cat to feel comfortable.

“He loves to 'talk,' that’s why he’s named Chatters,” she says, adding “he’s a great cat.”

Chatters is also “polydactyl,” — he has seven toes.

All of the cats surrendered to the shelter were treated for various health concerns, Hawkins says.

“They all had giardia, needed behaviour modification and most were spayed or neutered,” she says, adding some were transferred to different shelters.

Hawkins says the various treatments and accompanying vet bills cost the agency thousands of dollars and expressed her appreciation for the huge amount of community support that was provided when asked.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
