Lawnmower lawsuit might put a few bucks in your pocket

Lawnmowers are probably the last thing you’re thinking about these days, but the recent settlement of a class action suit involving Canadian purchased lawnmowers may make it profitable to consider what’s sitting in your garage, waiting for the grass to grow again.

The lawsuit originated in 2010 in Ontario and Quebec, claiming companies who manufactured the lawnmowers and engines mislabelled the products to show a higher horsepower rating than was actually contained in the lawn mower, according to the claims administrator's website.

Canadian purchasers of a gas-powered, walk behind or riding lawn mower whose manufacturer is covered by the lawsuit and containing a gas engine labelled at 30 horsepower or less are eligible. The lawnmowers must have been purchased in Canada between Jan. 1, 1994 and Dec. 31, 2012.

Anyone owning one is eligible to make a claim for a portion of the $7,535,000 settlement. Depending on horsepower, and whether you have proof of purchase, owners may receive between $15 and $55 through the settlement.

Claims must be filed by May 22, 2019 and can be filed at the Canadian Lawn Mower Class Action website here.

The settlements represent a compromise of the disputed claims and are not an admission of wrongdoing, liability or fault by the defendants.
