Indians wait through 2 replay delays to confirm triple play against Dodgers’ Adrian Gonzalez
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Cleveland Indians executed an unorthodox triple play in the fifth inning against the Dodgers on Tuesday night that required two video replay reviews to sort out.
The Dodgers opened the inning with pitcher Josh Beckett’s second double of the game, followed by a bunt hit by Dee Gordon and an RBI single by Yasiel Puig. That chased Justin Masterson after his teammates staked him to a 5-2 lead.
Kyle Crockett relieved and Adrian Gonzalez lifted a fly ball to left fielder Michael Brantley, who threw out Gordon at the plate. Catcher Yan Gomes then fired to second baseman Jason Kipnis for the tag on Puig as he slid headfirst.
Cleveland manager Terry Francona challenged the original safe call and got the play overturned after a replay delay that lasted 1 minute, 29 seconds. Dodgers skipper Don Mattingly then challenged the call at the plate, but that call stood after another wait of 1 minute, 34 seconds.
