North Okanagan murderer loses appeal of sentence

VERNON – A Lumby man convicted of murdering his spouse in 2017 has lost an appeal to have the sentence overturned.

Howard Everett Krewson was found guilty in September 2016 for the second-degree murder of his spouse Linda Marie Stewart in 2014. He was sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility for parole for 13 years.

Krewson shot Stewart at her property in Lumby while she attempting to flee in her car after the couple had had an argument.

He appealed the conviction citing "involuntary intoxication," but the three-judge panel at the British Columbia Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal in a Jan. 18 decision.

Court documents state Krewson had consumed copious amounts of alcohol, marihuana and pills on the day of the murder.

"Evidence overwhelmingly established self-induced intoxication, not involuntary intoxication," Justice Sunni Stromberg-Stein said in the decision.
