PHOTOS: Top decorating tips for the holidays

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN – You have a tree. You have some ornaments. Maybe you even have some garland and ribbon. But if you are not sure what to do next, do not worry, we have some of the hottest tips from local designers to make sure your home is looking its best this holiday season.

Kathy Underwood of Portfolio Interiors says the big theme she has seen cropping up this year is peacock and the options out there for using it as a decorating theme during the holidays allow you to go very simple and pretty, or full out and glitzy.

She also says natural materials are being used with silvers and whites for very understated yet beautiful decor this season. Burlap and pinecones mixed with silver balls and berry sprays make it easy to stick with the less is more theme Underwood has been trying to use for most of her decorating as well.

Another great tip is to use what you have. Dig in the toy box, reimagine ways to use your everyday items, use food (especially fruit) as decor and work with your space.

If you have kids, try to involve them in the decorating process too. The holidays are about family time and they will appreciate getting to help out, even if it’s just one room.
