Brazil’s Temer fires minister, names 1st woman to cabinet

RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian President Michel Temer fired his solicitor general Friday and replaced him with the first woman to join his cabinet of all white men.

Temer’s office announced in a statement that Grace Mendonca would replace Fabio Medina Osorio in the cabinet-level job, without elaborating.

Local media have reported disagreements between Osorio and Temer’s Chief of Staff Eliseu Padilha.

In an excerpt of an interview later Friday with Veja magazine, Osorio alleged that he was ousted as part of an attempt to stifle a corruption investigation involving state oil company Petrobras.

Three other ministers resigned from Temer’s government shortly after he became interim president in May, amid corruption allegations and leaked wiretapped conversations.

Temer took over the presidency permanently when President Dilma Rousseff was ousted by the Senate on Aug. 31.
