Driver uninjured after spill off Hwy. 6

Things could have been a lot worse when a truck tractor careened off a steep slope at Hwy. 6 and Miller's Road on April 8.

"It appears the truck suffered a mechanical failure and lost its steering as it rounded the corner," Lumby Cpl. Henry Proce said. "Amazingly, a rollover did not occur and the driver walked away with only very minor injuries."

One lane of the highway was closed while tow trucks extracted the heavy truck from the bottom of the slope.  Officials from the Ministry of the Environment were also called in, as a diesel spill had occurred near the creek.

Drivers going too fast in residential areas

In other Lumby news, Proce says complaints of speeders on Mountainview Ave from the highway to the intersection with Glencaird St. have been steadily coming in.

"This stretch of road is unique as it's posted 40 kph, not the usual 50 kph as in most of the Village," Proce says. "I've had our Community Policing staff set up there with their speed reader board and we have increased our enforcement as well, and a speeding ticket was issued to a resident last week.  So, bear this in mind if you drive on this residential road."

Promoting safety in schools

In addition to responding to calls, Lumby cops continue to be as proactive as possible.

"At the top of the list in this regard is our interaction with the four local schools," Proce said. "Over the past few weeks we conducted a number of presentations at the Cherryville Elementary School including a lock down drill. With the advent of school shootings in Canada and the U.S. these drills have become an accepted routine of school life."

This past week RCMP also conducted three cyber-bullying presentations at J.W. Ingalls.

"With the huge increase in social media, cyber bullying is becoming a very real problem that police have to deal with," Proce said.  "Youths have to realize that harassing messages, threats or inappropriate photographs sent via text or posted on-line may constitute a criminal offense."

Likewise, victims on the receiving end of  cyber bullying are encouraged to report incidents to police as soon as they occur.

Cops requesting public's assistance in locating the following individuals:

RCMP currently hold outstanding arrest warrants for a few former and current residents of Lumby.  These include Burns James LEPINE ( prohibited driving), Christopher BRONK ( impaired driving) and Tyler Alexander COOMBS ( theft under).  If you have information on the location of any of these individuals or see them in the area,  Lumby police requests you give the detachment a call.
