Quantum mine up and running after Mauritania strike

VANCOUVER – First Quantum Minerals Ltd. says workers at its mine in Mauritania are back to work after a 12-day strike.

The Vancouver-based company (TSX:FM) temporarily suspended operations at the Guelb Moghrein copper-gold mine earlier this month because of the job action.

First Quantum said it lost 12 production days, and is continuing to work through a government-facilitated mediation process to resolve differences with the unions.

It says the majority of workers are now back on the job and operations have resumed.

Earlier this month there were reports of clashes between security forces and workers who blocked access to a mine owned by First Quantum subsidiary Mauritania Copper Mines.

Reuters reported that one person was killed in a clash between government security forces and demonstrators outside the mine.

First Quantum shares were trading at $17.64 up 44 cents or 2.55 per cent during afternoon trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
