Penticton begins processing first batch of retail cannabis applications

PENTICTON – The initial application window for those wishing to open cannabis retail outlets in Penticton has closed, leaving the city with a total of 11 applications to process.

The city announced in a press release issued today, Feb. 5, it was ready to begin processing the applications received in the first window, which closed on Feb. 1.

Notifications and signage are being prepared by the city to provide residents with information about the locations of the applications as public discussion begins.

“We anticipate bringing forth recommendations on the proposed locations to council in mid-April,” city planning manager Blake Laven says in the release.

Property owners within 45 metres of a proposed location will receive a notice in the mail and signs will be installed at each of the locations.

A map of locations and a summary of the applications will be published at the city's website: www.penticton.ca.

The city says it is planning several activities in the next few weeks to inform the community, in addition to notifying residents of the start of the two-week public comment process once notices are in place, expected in the third week of February.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
