TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (11,639.75, up 147.24 points):

Research In Motion Ltd. (TSX:RIM). Consumer technology. Up 12 cents, or 1.73 per cent, at $7.05 on 8,520,183 shares.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX). Miner. Down $1.49, or 4.20 per cent, at $33.04 on 8,001,088 shares. The company reported net earnings fell to US$750 million, or 75 cents per share in the three months ended June 30. That’s down from $1.16 billion, or $1.16 per share, a year ago.

Nexen Inc. (TSX:NXY). Oil and gas. Down 11 cents, or 0.42 per cent, at $25.96 on 6,967,091 shares.

Yellow Media Inc. (TSX:YLO). Directory publisher. Up 1.5 cents, or 27.27 per cent, at seven cents on 6,917,445 shares.

Celestica Inc. (TSX:CLS). Technology. Up six cents, or 0.82 per cent, at $7.39 on 6,196,078 shares.

Baja Mining Corp. (TSX:BAJ). Miner. Down 0.5 cents, or 5.88 per cent, at eight cents on 6,062,659 shares.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,181.42 up 9.09 points):

Pinecrest Energy Inc. (TSXV:PRY). Oil and gas. Up seven cents, or 3.85 per cent, at $1.89 on 5,542,041 shares.

Canamex Resources Corp. (TSXV:CSQ). Miner. Down four cents, or 13.33 per cent, at 26 cents on 4,298,828 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Novagold Resources (TSX:NG). Miner. Down $1.38, or 25.32 per cent, at $4.07 on 2,857,104 shares. Novagold’s shares plunged Thursday as the future of its flagship Donlin Creek gold project in Alaska, which it jointly owns with Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX), looked bleak. Barrick announced Thursday that a number of projects in its pipeline don’t meet cost targets after announcing quarterly earnings dropped 35 per cent.
