“Corn Island” by Georgia’s director George Ovashvili wins top award at Czech film festival

PRAGUE – “Corn Island” by Georgia’s director George Ovashvili has won the top prize at the 49th edition of an international film festival in the Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary.

The movie, a coproduction of Georgia, Germany, France, the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan, is a psychological drama with sparse dialogues about an old farmer and his granddaughter living on a tiny island in a river that forms a natural border between Georgia and its breakaway region of Abkhazia.

The winner was chose from 12 contenders for the Crystal Globe by the festival’s grand jury, led by Spanish producer Luis Minarro. Saturday’s award also comes with a $25,000 cash prize.
