Former media executive running for Vancouver mayor’s job in November election

VANCOUVER – Former journalist and media executive Kirk LaPointe will be running against incumbent Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson in the next civic election.

LaPointe has been chosen to lead the slate for the Non-Partisan Association in the Nov. 15 election.

In a news release, LaPointe says his media career has given him the experience and ability to initiate and deliver change and that Vancouverites have a strong desire for change.

LaPointe has worked in senior positions at several media outlets including the Vancouver Sun, CTV News, the National Post, The Canadian Press, and he was a CBC ombudsman.

He is also an adjunct professor at the University of B.C.’s Graduate School of Journalism, where he teaches ethics and leadership.

The NPA release says LaPointe has stepped down from his role as executive director of the Organization of News Ombudsmen to run in the campaign.
