Judge considers opposition in Corcoran Gallery’s merger National Gallery, George Washington U.
WASHINGTON – A District of Columbia judge is considering whether to allow a group representing some students, alumni, donors and faculty to intervene in a proposed merger of the Corcoran Gallery of Art with two larger institutions.
Judge Robert Okun heard arguments Friday on the group Save the Corcoran’s motion to intervene. Okun said he will consider the case over the weekend and issue a ruling Monday.
The Corcoran’s board is seeking to merge the museum and its art college with George Washington University and the National Gallery of Art after years of financial shortfalls and renovations it cannot afford.
The group Save the Corcoran wants to stop the merger. It says the Corcoran has been badly mismanaged and could survive as an independent museum with better fundraising and management.
