Vernon councillors back 8.5 acre business park development

VERNON – A proposal to build an 8.5-acre business park on Silver Star Road came one step closer to reality yesterday after the City supported rezoning the site.

City of Vernon council approved the rezoning of a 116,000 square-foot business park on Silver Star Road at the Feb. 25 council meeting.

The three-phase, 37-unit, Silver Star Gateway Business Park project is set for an 8.5-acre site east of the junction at Silver Star Road and Pleasant Valley Road.

Council approved several rezoning and building variance permits for the business park project slated for 5012 Silver Star Road and plots of adjacent land. The project still has one final step before approval and will go to a public hearing Mar. 25.

City staff told council the site was one of the last big vacant sites in the city designated in the Official Community Plan for this type of development.

A presentation showed the Silver Star Gateway Business Park to be built in three phases, consisting of 37 units spread over five buildings and totalling 116,125 square-feet.

The first phase of the business park development will consist of nine units in two separate buildings, zoned for light industrial use and spanning over 36,000 square feet. The second phase is scheduled for a further 16 units designed for light industrial and spread over two buildings. The third phase will consist of five buildings comprising of 12 units zoned for commercial use.

Providing council approve the development construction on the first phase is anticipated to begin this spring.

A public hearing regarding the project will take place 5:30 p.m. Mar. 25.
