Puerto Rico man fires on governor’s residence, shoots self

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Authorities in Puerto Rico say a man shot and killed himself after firing several times on the official governor’s residence in San Juan.

The shooting occurred before dawn Friday just outside the 16th century residence known as La Fortaleza. Police Superintendent Jose Caldero told El Nuevo Dia newspaper that at least three rounds struck the building including one that hit a window in the governor’s office.

Gov. Alejandro Garcia-Padilla was not in the office at the time and there were no reported injuries.

The governor said in a statement afterward that the incident is under investigation and he called on people to pray for the gunman’s family. The gunman was identified as a 44-year-old employee of a government-run insurance fund, but the motive was unknown.
