Official: Afghan forces ambush insurgents with plans to hit capital, killing 7 in gunbattle

KABUL – The Afghan government says seven insurgents who were planning to attack the capital were killed in an early morning gunbattle just outside of Kabul.

Intelligence agency spokesman Latifullah Mashal says intelligence agents discovered that the men were massing weapons at a compound east of Kabul and ambushed the insurgents when they returned to the site around 1 a.m. Thursday to prepare for the attack.

He says a gunbattle broke out and five of the insurgents blew themselves up with explosives. Police shot and killed the remaining men a few hours after dawn.

Mashal says the agents found a car full of explosives and ammunition in the compound, along with heavy weaponry and machine-guns. He says no Afghan forces or civilians were killed.
