VIDEO: Hauntingly beautiful mist rises from Okanagan Lake

KELOWNA – It doesn’t happen often because the weather conditions and the temperature of the water in Okanagan Lake have to be just right.

Kelowna wedding videographer Jerry Mason posted a time-lapse video to YouTube he took last weekend of arctic sea smoke on the lake.

The very cold air mass that flowed into the Okanagan Valley dropped the temperature to around -18 C. The lake water was relatively warm, so moist air can be seen rising from the surface.

The “smoke” gets twisted by the wind and can form small tornado-like structures as it rises to the low clouds.

It’s a very hauntingly beautiful effect.

Why be a “snowbird”?Where else in the world can you get a view like this that constantly morphs into another equally as beautiful every day of the year?
