Tropical Storm Lisa expected to strengthen in the Atlantic

MIAMI – Tropical Storm Lisa was expected to gain a bit more strength before weakening in a couple of days, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Tuesday.

Lisa was centred about 515 miles (830 kilometres) west of the Cabo Verde Islands Tuesday night and was moving northwest about 10 mph (17 kph), the hurricane centre said. The storm’s maximum sustained winds were 45 mph (70 kph).

The storm was expected to gain some additional strength through Wednesday, before it begins to steadily weaken Thursday, the centre said. The storm poses no threat to land.

Also in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Karl’s maximum sustained winds were holding steady at 40 mph (65 kph) and the storm was moving westward at 14 mph (20 kph) late Tuesday. Karl was centred about 385 miles (620 kilometres) northeast of the Leeward Islands. Some strengthening is expected during the next couple of days.

In the Pacific, former Tropical Storm Paine dissipated Tuesday night.
